Pre-emergent timing for South Carolina lawns

Apply a pre-emergent before the target weed germinates. In South Carolina, the right date depends on the weed, your location, the weather, and the product. One statewide calendar cannot cover every lawn.

Start with the weed and grass

Identify what you want to prevent and which turf you have. Summer annual weeds and winter annual weeds need different treatment windows. A product must be labeled for both the use and the grass on your lawn.

For established Bermuda, Clemson gives mid-March as an approximate spring window in the Piedmont and mountains. Treat that as a planning point. Watch local conditions and follow the product's directions for timing and watering-in.

Check spring and fall plans separately

A spring application aimed at summer weeds does not settle the fall plan. Before treating for winter weeds, check what is present, what has been applied already, and the product's annual limit. Do not keep adding applications because a date appears on a generic calendar.

Pre-emergents do not remove mature weeds already growing in the lawn. Identify those weeds before choosing a separate treatment.

Seeding changes the plan

Many pre-emergents can also stop desired grass from establishing. Check the label's interval before and after seeding. Newly laid sod and new plugs can have rooting restrictions too.

Do not assume mesotrione is suitable for every grass seed or every ryegrass project. Confirm the exact turf species, seed mixture, product, and label. If the plan is unclear, hold treatment until it is resolved.

Coordinate aeration and application

Soil disturbance can affect a pre-emergent treatment. Put aeration, seeding, and weed prevention on one schedule. Tell the applicator about prior treatments and the dates.
