When to aerate Bermuda grass in Upstate SC
Aerate Bermuda when it is actively growing and can recover. Late spring and summer are the usual planning periods in Upstate SC. Check green-up, moisture, and the forecast before choosing the day.
Check whether aeration is needed
Compacted soil and poor water entry can make core aeration useful. Look first at where water stands and where traffic is concentrated. Aeration will not fix every drainage problem, and it does not replace grading or other repairs when those are needed.
Choose conditions that allow recovery
Wait for active growth. Avoid aerating dormant turf, a drought-stressed lawn, or saturated ground. The soil should allow a core to come out without smearing or breaking into dust.
Do not treat a fixed date as permission to aerate. A late-season job needs enough growing weather for recovery before dormancy. If recovery time is short, move the job to the next active growing period.
Coordinate weed prevention
Tell the service provider when pre-emergents were applied and when the next treatment is planned. Cultivation disturbs soil, so those jobs should share a schedule. Read the pre-emergent guide before booking them separately.
Prepare the property
Mark irrigation heads, shallow lines, cables, and any equipment that could be hit. Clear the lawn and arrange pet access. For robotic mowing, pause the schedule and have the mower and station area accounted for before work begins.
