Should you overseed Bermuda with ryegrass for winter?
Ryegrass can keep a Bermuda lawn green in winter. It also adds work. It can compete with Bermuda as that grass grows back in spring. Decide whether that tradeoff fits your property before buying seed.
Decide what you want from the lawn
A brown winter Bermuda lawn may suit your yard. Winter ryegrass means planning for continued mowing and care. It also means managing the transition when the warm-season grass resumes growth.
Consider how the lawn is used, whether irrigation is available, and who will do the extra work. Do not add ryegrass simply because brown winter Bermuda looks unfamiliar.
Check weed control before seeding
List the weed products used on the lawn. Check planned treatments too. Many weed preventers affect desired seed too. Read the exact label for the grass, seed, and timing. Do not assume a product that permits fescue establishment also permits your ryegrass mixture.
