Are Robotic Mowers Safe for Dogs and Kids?
Short answer: yes. Segway Navimow mowers have four safety systems that stop the blade automatically. Here's what each one does and what to watch for with your pets.
The Four Safety Systems
Lift detection. If the mower is lifted more than 10mm off the ground, the blade stops in under 3 seconds. This protects paws and hands that get underneath it.
Tilt detection. If the mower tips over on a slope or hill, the blade stops immediately.
Obstacle sensors. Ultrasonic sensors scan ahead of the mower. When it detects an object—a ball, a toy, a dog—it slows, stops, and reroutes. It does not push through.
GPS virtual boundary. Trimly maps your yard using GPS and RTK during installation. There is no buried perimeter wire. That means nothing for your dog to dig up or chew.
For Dogs
Most dogs adjust within a week. The mower moves at about 3 mph—slower than a walking dog. It runs quiet, around 58 decibels, which is less noise than a normal conversation.
Three practical tips:
- Supervise the first three mows. Watch how your dog reacts. Most sniff it once and ignore it after that.
- Pick up toys before each run. The obstacle sensor will stop at a chew toy, but it's simpler to clear the yard beforehand.
- Schedule mowing when your dog is inside. Some dogs chase it at first. This is safe but annoying. Schedule the mower during a time your dog is indoors until the novelty fades.
We service homes with Labs, Chihuahuas, Golden Retrievers, and everything in between. No injuries.
For Kids
The Navimow runs quietly. It does not throw grass clippings—it mulch-cuts them into fine particles that fall back onto the lawn. The blade sits just above the ground and stops the moment any part of the mower is lifted.
Two rules we recommend:
- Supervise children under 5 when the mower is running. Same common sense you'd use with any powered yard equipment.
- Older kids tend to love it. It's a good way to talk about how robots handle routine tasks.
What Trimly Does at Installation
We handle setup end to end. During installation, we map your mowing zone and create no-go zones around flower beds, play areas, and trees. We set the default schedule to daylight hours. We walk you through the Navimow app so you can pause or stop the mower from your phone in seconds.
After that, you can override the schedule anytime from the app. Need to let the dog out mid-mow? One tap pauses it.
The Bottom Line
The Segway Navimow is built for residential use. Its safety systems are automatic and independent—they don't require you to remember anything. Families with dogs and kids use it every day across Greenville, Spartanburg, Anderson, and the rest of Upstate SC.
You don't have to watch it. That's the whole point.
